Meet Avocado!

A 1-year old Black Lab mix, Avocado has come to Happy Dogs at 23rd & 1st every day since July 2016.

Avocado is too cute!

Avocado is too cute!

He loves to play all day. His best friend is another lab mix named Mugsy, but in fact, he’s got a whole black dog squad of pals.

What’s Avocado’s backstory? After deciding to adopt a dog and filing an application with Muddy Paws Rescue NYC, Andrew and Lina stepped into a mobile adoption van on May 21st of last year and immediately locked eyes with an adorable Black Lab mix. He had the cutest white paws and was sitting quietly in his crate while his siblings played around him. The moment they held him, Andrew and Lina knew that Avocado had to be theirs.

What’s Avocado’s credo? “No toy left behind.” He always needs to gather all of them in one pile and cycle through them before he ends up taking a nap again.

What does he love? Scratches under his chin and on his head, playing in the snow, playing hide-and-seek, and taking naps in the sun.

Avocado loves the snow. (He also likes his very handsome kerchief.)

Hates? Skateboards. And he definitely does not like the rain!

Funny anecdote? Even though Avocado does not like the rain at all, he loves being toweled off when he gets home from being out in the rain. He also has an extremely expressive face, so you know exactly how he’s feeling.

Favorite treats? Baby carrots, peanut butter, Blue Buffalo chicken strips, and YoPup frozen yogurt cups (peanut butter and banana flavored, thank you very much.)

According to “dog whisperer” Cesar Millan, every dog needs a job. What’s Avocado’s “job”? Avocado is an official alarm clock. Every morning, no matter if it’s a work day, weekend day or holiday, he is up and giving us lots of slobbery kisses no later than 6:30 a.m. Sleeping in is not in the cards for this pup (or for Andrew and Lina). Job well done, Avocado!

Meet Ziggy!

Ziggy is a 1-year-old Miniature Australian Shepherd who’s been a member of Happy Dogs at 23rd & 1st since March 2016. His parents, Kari and Brian, also call him Zigster, Zigman, Zigmund, Ziggidy, Zigzag, Bear, Little bear, and Lovebug, but the staff at Happy Dogs simply call him “the little fluff ball”.

Baby Ziggy.

He’s been a daily Happy Dogs member since he was four months old, and his best friend is an Aussie/Husky mix named Chloe, who not only goes to daycare with Ziggy, but also lives across the street from him. In addition to Chloe, Ziggy has an expanding squad of Mini Aussies at Happy Dogs.

If Ziggy could tell you his credo, what would it be? “Sticks make the world go round.”

Seriously, kid. Do not take Ziggy's stick!

Seriously, kid. Do not take Ziggy’s stick!

Loves: Brian and Kari. Also the usual: running and playing. STICKS (of course). And ripping the stuffing out of toys. Bones. SNOW is his absolute favorite. He would live in the snow if he could. Also worth mentioning again: STICKS.
Hates: Cars. (He gets very car sick.) He’s afraid of city grates, though he’s getting better.

What are his favorite foods and/or treats? Do STICKS count? If not: Bully Sticks, lamb lungs—any dog treats, actually. Also: carrots. Ice and SNOW are two other edibles for Ziggy. Oh, and PEANUT BUTTER.

Can you share a funny anecdote about Ziggy? Some dogs are skittish or fickle with their affection, but not Ziggy. He really soaks it all up. When he meets new people on the street or in an elevator, he goes right up to them and sits on their feet—actually on their feet. “You, stranger, may now pet me. You’re welcome!”

Yes, you may cuddle me. You're welcome.

Yes, you may cuddle me. You’re welcome.

What’s he like after a day at Happy Dogs?  He’s at first rejuvenated—runs home and wants to play. But then once his body hits the floor of the apartment, it’s lights out.

Meet Ferdinand!

He’s a 3-year-old male bloodhound mix who’s been a daily doggy at Happy Dogs at 23rd and 1st since January 2015. Named after Ferdinand the Bull from the children’s book The Story of Ferdinand by Munro Leaf, Ferdinand the Bloodhound’s credo is the same as the Bull’s: “Stop and smell the roses.”
Ferd1
Yours would be, too, if you’d started life out like Ferdinand the Bloodhound did. Adopted from a shelter in Tennessee at 9 months old in January of 2014 by his parents, Kate and John, Ferdinand quickly lived up to his namesake’s credo. A lover of the lazy Saturday or Sunday, this dog knew how to relax. And he knew his life in NYC was the one for him!

Ferdinand stops to enjoy the snow.

What’s life like at Happy Dogs for FerdHis favorite thing to do is sleep. When he’s awake, he plays with his best buddy, Napoleon, who’s a little Pomeranian.

Napoleon and Ferdinand = best friends forever.

Loves: Other than Napoleon and sleeping and lots of snuggle time and the occasional nap in Mom and Dad’s bed? Chasing his own tail in the park. Also: grass and the outdoors and running around in circles off-leash. Oh and sniffing, eating, and sleeping some more. Oh, and bully sticks. Oh, and peanut butter. (He loves a lot.)
